The town's origins lie in a Gallo-Roman settlement, but above all in a chapel built in the 11th century near a spring. Dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the chapel gave its name to Dammarie (Lady Mary). Dammarie-les-Lys boasts a rich architectural heritage: old bourgeois homes, buildings with character such as the Espace Nino Ferrer and the Château des Bouillants, now an exhibition space, not to mention the superb remains of the Abbey du Lys, founded in 1244 by Blanche de Castille and listed as a Monument Historique. Dammarie-les-Lys also boasts a fine plant heritage, with 9 parks and squares, totalling almost 14 hectares of green space.
