The town's name comes from the Old French brai or briga, meaning "damp earth" and "plateau" or "height" respectively. A veritable open book on history, Brie-Comte-Robert has preserved its historic center, with its cobbled streets, church, Hôtel-Dieu and 12th-century château... an ensemble that comes to life in all its glory during the Médiévale festival, held every year in October. Then, at the beginning of June, with the Rose Festival, the town revives its past as a rose-growing town. The town's vast green spaces and the Chemin des Roses, a former SNCF railway line, offer beautiful routes for walkers and cyclists.
