The name Vert-Saint-Denis comes from the Gallic vernos meaning "alder", a tree found in wetlands and waterways. Saint-Denis refers to the abbey of the same name, which once owned land there. Vert-Saint-Denis has been involved in agriculture since ancient times. The commune boasts a superb architectural heritage (Saint-Pierre et Saint-Paul church, Tour du Petit-Jard, not forgetting Pouilly-le-fort and the impressive Grand Berge menhir in the Bois de Bréviande), as well as an eventful history: Philippe Auguste was born here on August 22, 1165, and Pasteur experimented with a vaccine.
