Between Le Havre and Fécamp, 9 km from the sea, Criquetot-l'Esneval was a village at the crossroads of ancient roads, such as the Roman road linking Harfleur to Fécamp. Excavations have determined that the site was inhabited from prehistoric times. It is here that the passage was made from Gaul to present-day England. And its name would come from kerch, the Celtic word for height, or kirkja , meaning church. As for Esneval, it comes from the name of a line of barons. The village was indeed a barony until the 16th century and was home to a large Protestant community. Today remains a beautiful heritage worth a stop.
