Founded in the 10th century, Bolbec takes its name from bol, a Scandinavian word for man, and bec, a stream. Initially made up of two hamlets, a third was added in the 12th century, Val-au-Grès. Mills were built along the Bolbec river, and the manufacture of woollen cloth - and later cotton - developed. In the 19th century, the town's activity intensified thanks to steam-powered machines: spinning, weaving and canvas printing saw the population double between 1818 and 1850. Today, the town has a population of over 12,000 and, with the old Desgenétais factory and its mills, remains a witness to its rich industrial past.
