The village takes its name from the Latin Rubeum Monasterium (church or red monastery), attested since the 11th century. However, as you will see, the current church, dedicated to Saint Martin, is not red... The rubeum epithet would therefore indicate the existence of an earlier brick church, built in very ancient times. We can better understand why the inhabitants of Rougemontiers are called Rubimonasterians!
