Foulbec, like many other village names, is composed of the name "bec" which means "river or stream" in Old Norse. In 1959, when the Tancarville bridge was built, access roads cut the village in two, completely reshaping the appearance of the village. Until 1970, maritime activity on the Risle up to Pont-Audemer, and through the Foulbec swing bridge (now abandoned), was intense.
