The Marais Vernier is a 45 km2 semi-circular marshland plain, which was ordered drained in 1599 by a royal edict of Henri IV. Until 1850, the marsh occupied 2,500 hectares, when the Seine still covered half the area. Today, this vast natural amphitheater, bordered to the north by the Seine and to the south by the wooded slopes that end the Roumois plateau, is an exceptional micro-region with a unique heritage. Classified as an area of international ecological interest, the Marais Vernier is a wildlife reserve, home to numerous sedentary and migratory birds, as well as an exceptional flora.
