Around the 9th, 10th and 11th centuries, Bouquelon corresponded to a vast beech forest. Moreover, if we refer to etymology, bóki in Old Norse (medieval Scandinavian language) is found in the toponymy of Bouquelon, literally "beechwood". Part of the commune, known as La Vallée, is located in the Marais Vernier. This place corresponds to the wooded slope and fruit yards, where apple trees of local varieties (Rever apple in particular) grow, forming a peripheral cordon around the wetland area of the marsh. But if the commune is now known, it is for its parcel of land, unique in France, which covers the southern part of the Marais Vernier. These narrow parcels, which extend into the heart of the marsh, form a regional nature reserve, called Courtils de Bouquelon.
