The village of Frontenay is divided into three neighbourhoods: Vau (beautiful houses with gardens and washing), Le Viseney (see Parraud house, opposite the county refining cellar) and the city. Frontenay was, in medieval Times, an important village with a strong castle that protected the salt route thanks to three watchtower, around a spur dominating the vineyards and the plain of the Bresse. Around 1404, Saint Colette created the first community of reformed Clares. Since 1446, the castle, given by Louis II of Châlon-Arlay to one of his riders, Gauthier de Fallerans, has remained in the same family. A route to discovery of the architectural heritage is signposted throughout the village. The writer Bernard Clavel is also the author of the author Bernard Clavel. Fell under the charm of the village in 2000, he asked to be buried here.
