The commune of Cernon shares with Lect, on the opposite bank of the Ain, the privilege of housing the Vouglans dam on its territory. EDF, which owns the dam, is building a housing estate in Cernon for its operating personnel. At 520 meters above sea level, Cernon is a peaceful spot, away from the hustle and bustle of the nearby lakefront, with magnificent views from the Châtelet belvedere. The origin of Cernon's name could be medieval, cern meaning woods to be cut. Forests are everywhere around the village: the vast Bois des Cantons, Bois de Valfanans, Bois des Palanches and Bois de Vaucluse.
