Mariana, a Roman city, was founded in 93 B.C. by Caius Marius to ensure Roman settlement in Corsica. The city flourished from the 1st to the 4th centuries. Then, with Christianization, came the division between the republics of Pisa and Genoa. Under the Pisan occupation, the Canonica cathedral was built near the site of Mariana. 300 meters from Canonica, the Romanesque church of San-Parteo was built in the 11th and 12th centuries. Mariana, Canonica and San-Parteo were declared Historical Monuments in 1866 by Prosper Mérimée. In the heart of Lucciana is the beautiful church of Saint-Michel, one of the most beautiful Baroque buildings.
