During the struggle for independence, Pasquale Paoli established his headquarters in Murato for a time. In 1763, the village minted the coins (soldis) of independent Corsica from 1762 to 1767; it was also the birthplace of Guiseppi Fieschi, a troubled figure sentenced to death in 1836 for a failed attempt on Louis-Philippe's life. At the end of the 19th century, a certain Clément Léoni, aged 22, left his village to emigrate, like many other Corsicans, to South America in search of fortune; he settled in Caracas. Fate undoubtedly worked in his favor, but what's more incredible is the fate of his son, Raul Léoni, who became President of Venezuela in 1963.
