In the first century BC, during Roman peace, Montcaret and its Gallo-Roman villa were located at the crossroads of the Roman roads linking Cahors/Lalinde/Bordeaux and Lyon. A golden era that came to an end with the invasions of Frankish tribes, then Vandals, Visigoths and finally Saracens and Vikings. Montcaret was often destroyed and had to rise from the ashes by building fortifications. Whether in the hands of the French or the English during the 100 Years' War, it had the status of a military fortress. Nothing has spared this village, which has always been at the heart of turmoil through the ages. Well worth a visit!
