In the first century BC, during the Roman peace, Montcaret and its Gallo-Roman villa were situated at the crossroads of the Roman roads linking Cahors/Lalinde/Bordeaux and Lyon. A golden era which ended with the invasions of the Frankish tribes, then the Vandals, Visigoths and finally the Saracens and Vikings. Montcaret was often destroyed and had to rise from its ashes by building fortifications. During the Hundred Years' War, it was in the hands of the French and the English and had the status of a military fortress. Nothing has spared this village, which has always been at the heart of the turmoil through the ages. It is well worth a visit!
