Chartres, which dates back to the 2nd century BC, is famous today for its cathedral, which Rodin called "the Acropolis of France", and for its pilgrimages, which attract thousands of visitors every year. The old town is made up of two parts (the upper town, around the cathedral, and the lower town, on the banks of the Eure and its tributaries) which form a remarkable ensemble of medieval and Renaissance streets, bridges and buildings. Wandering around here means going from surprise to surprise. Events take place on a regular basis, but it's "Chartres en Lumières" that attracts the greatest number of visitors from April to September.
