At the borders of the Beauce and the Hurepoix, Saint-Symphorien-le-Château is located 22 km from Chartres. Esclimont Castle contributed greatly to its history, but the village's past crossed, in 1944, the person of General Patton, commander of the 3rd American army who liberated the village. Colonel Guy de La Vasselais, who became mayor of the village in 1948, accompanied Patton throughout his liberation campaign in Europe. At the entrance to the village, the first landmark of 1948 was restored on the occasion of the 50 th anniversary of the «road to freedom».This route goes from Saint-Lô, in Normandy, to Bastogne (Belgium): throughout this journey of mileage terminals have been erected. In the town hall, a bust of Patton was inaugurated in 1961 in the presence of his son.
