Réguisheim lies on an important ancient Roman road that linked present-day Switzerland with Strasbourg. Invaded by the Franks, the village was alternately owned by different lords, before becoming freely administered from 1789 onwards. Legend has it that the place known as Kastelgraben, on which the castle of the village's nobles once stood, is shrouded in mystery... In the forest that borders it, the sound of the horseshoes of a horde of horses led by Pierre de Réguisheim on their way to Frankfurt can sometimes be heard. Masses were held up to the 19th century to atone for this man's cruelty and misdeeds..
