This unique national park lies in the heart of the Julian Alps, in the north-west of the country. In its midst, Triglav, the "Three Heads" (2,864 m), is the symbol of an entire nation. From Kranjska Gora in the north to Tolmin in the south, from the Italian border in the west to the outskirts of Bled in the east, it covers 83,982 ha and represents 4% of the country's surface area. In the north, crossing the Vršič Pass (1,611 m) is the only direct route to the Soča Valley and the Primorska region. Glacial lakes (Bohinj, Triglav lakes), waterfalls (Savica, Peričnik), gorges (Pokljuka, Vintgar), deep valleys sculpted by glaciers and peaks make up this white, blue and green treasure. The flora, certainly Alpine but also with Mediterranean touches, has attracted the curiosity of botanists since the 18th century. Golden eagles, chamois, capercaillie and birch hens are the masters of this symphonic nature. In its current form, the park has existed since 1981. The initial project for a reserve was launched in 1908. It came to fruition in 1924. A total of 1,400 hectares were protected over a twenty-year period. A second boost in 1961 extended the reserve to 2,000 ha. The park's head office, Dom Trenta, is located in Trenta. The park covers eight municipalities, including Bohinj, Bovec and Kranjska Gora.
