With its 4,200 inhabitants, Kobarid can be surprising. The town looks very different from the villages of nearby Upper Carniola, with its Roman-tiled houses and less steeply pitched roofs. Its excellent museum and monuments bear witness to the valley's tumultuous past. A whole network of trails and themed circuits allow you to discover the area's rich history. A martyred town in the First World War, Kobarid lies at a point where the valley widens and the Soča boasts a superb translucent blue, ideal for whitewater sports. The village is also one of the best gastronomic stops in the country.
