Mara is a shepherds' village perched on a plateau overlooking a landscape of Mediterranean scrub. The two churches are the most important elements of the village. San Giovanni Battista dates back to the 18th century and has elements of the Gothic-Aragonese style in its bell tower, while its facade has a Baroque feel. The area was dominated by the Doria family, who probably built the castle of Bonighinu, which later passed to the Arboreans and then to the Aragonese. The small church of Our Lady of Bonighinu is said to have been built in the 17th century following the apparition of the Virgin Mary who came to settle a conflict between the inhabitants of Mara and their neighbours
