Semestene is a tiny village of 160 inhabitants that spreads a quiet atmosphere with its narrow, cobbled streets and its 12th century church of San Giorgio, which was extensively remodelled in the 17th century. The village is most famous for its Romanesque church of San Nicola di Trullas, located 2.5 km away on the Campeda plateau. It was built in the early 12th century on the ruins of a Roman villa and next to a Camaldolese monastery, of which only ruins remain. San Nicola di Trullas is considered the purest example of Sardinian Romanesque art. At the beginning of August, the inhabitants march in procession from the village.
