For those tourists with vehicles and who want a change from the road that borders the lake, take the E62 that passes on the high mountain side or leave Stresa to climb up to Gignese, a small village between lake and mountains that offers a nice panoramic view of Lake Maggiore. There is an improbable museum of umbrellas and parasols, which were produced here for a century until 1940. Situated on Monte Mottarone at 800 metres above sea level, the village has an Alpine Botanical Garden where some 800 species of trees and other plants grow in silence.
