Founded in 817, Metzeral is the oldest city in the valley of Munster. Its name comes from the Latin word macerolia which means "small dry stone wall". This wall is reproduced in the form of silver stones masoned with sand on the coat of arms of Metzeral. The village boasts some beautiful buildings, among which we can mention the church of the Emm (erected on the hill of the same name) which is a secular place of pilgrimage dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Also known for its Valon mountain spring water, Metzeral is a great center for excursions to the Wormsa Valley and the Hohneck massif.
