Founded in 1741, Mittlach is the youngest town in the Munster Valley. It developed thanks to the immigration of loggers from Tyrol, the Black Forest and Switzerland. The Mittlach coat of arms pays homage to these proud pioneers with an axe planted on either side of a trunk. Closer to home, the village church, dedicated to the Immaculate Conception, was blessed on Whit Sunday 1929. Mittlach also has two curiosities: the Lourdes cave (1922), intended to thank the Virgin for having spared the village during the First World War, and the Mayerling chalet where the Secret of Mayerling was filmed (in 1948) with Jean Marais!
