Etymologically speaking, the name Sondernach comes from the Alemannic expression zur sundern Ach, meaning "near the southern stream of the valley". At the entrance to the village is the Notre-Dame-des-Neiges votive church, built in 1928 from Vosges pink sandstone. It is dedicated to the memory of French soldiers who fell in the 1914-1918 war. And with good reason: the road leading up to the crests and the Markstein via the Platzerwasel pass (1,183 m) is a former strategic axis built by the French in 1915. There's also the square, renamed Anne-Aymone after Valéry Giscard d'Estaing's visit in 1976.
