It is one of the oldest villages in Ecuador. But today it is a modern city, 80% of which have been rebuilt because of the earthquakes. You should not miss the Corpus Christi celebrations in mid-June. Numerous dances and processions all more beautiful, bright and colorful than the others follow each other around a main character: the Danzante. Since 2014, it has been recognised as a Unesco intangible world heritage site. The Danzante, whose appearance is similar to that of the Andean condor, dances for joy following the corn harvest. He holds a white weapon in his right hand and a dove in his left, symbol of the Holy Spirit.
