It was here that the former president, Rafael Correa, was inaugurated on 14 January 2007, in a symbolic ceremony attended by more than 20,000 people. On that day, he received the chief's baton to help him overcome the obstacles he would encounter during his term of office. Rafael Correa was keen to hold this ceremony in this village, as he had worked there as a volunteer with these populations when he was a student. Apart from its authentic Saturday morning market, the village is not very interesting and is mainly a stopover on the road leading to the Quilotoa lagoon. A bus takes you there in 2 hours from Latacunga.
