People come to Saquisilí for its market, every Thursday. The reputation of this market is well known. The name of the town means "to buy here" in Quechua. Today, all the inhabitants of the surrounding villages meet there to stock up on all kinds of foodstuffs or to sell their production. This authentic market is divided into eight sections, each with its own speciality: animals (llamas, pigs, cows, sheep...), agricultural products, utensils, clothes... The livestock market, a little outside the city, as well as the fruit and vegetable market, are really worth a visit. On this day, the village is a hive of activity. The women sitting behind their overloaded stalls watch the shoppers, the families wander around looking for a good deal, and the village only becomes quiet again at midday, once the deals are done. There are still few handicrafts, but more and more tourists are coming to Saquisili. On market days, the locals in traditional costumes eat in one of the many small popular restaurants. It is then easy to make contacts.
