Most hotels take tourists by cab to the first restored hut (4,800 m), from where they walk to the second, the famous Whymper (named after the first British mountaineer to climb the summit in 1880).In this way, we pass through the village of the last communities living on the volcano's slopes. The sky is clearest early in the morning or mid-afternoon (around 3pm). The hour-long hike between the two refuges is tough if you're not used to the altitude. Breathe easy and take it easy. It's also possible to discover another facet of this magnificent volcano thanks to the indigenous communities that welcome you around Calpi and where you'll find excellent guides. The ice mine tour with Jorge is a must, during which you'll reach the ice mines at around 4,800m altitude after a long but easy ascent on horseback and on foot.
