It is about 90 km from Riobamba, at an altitude of 2,355 m. In 1534, Sebastián de Benalcázar founded this town, which declared its independence on November 13, 1820. The market is held here on Sundays, and on 29 June the patron saint of the village is celebrated. Alausí was the starting point of the train that went down to the Nariz del Diablo, and this was practically its only interest. On the days when the train ran, the quiet village was invaded by a motley crew of tourists. On the other hand, there are few tourist facilities in the area, especially since the railroads have closed down, and Alausi seems to have been abandoned.
