Located 237 km southeast of Quito and with a population of about 40,000, Puyo is the capital of the province of Pastaza. Like many Amazonian cities, Puyo was founded by Dominican missionaries (in 1899). The city is prosperous and the small paved streets, lined with wooden houses, show a sweetness of life rare in other Amazonian cities. In May, a big fair takes place there over four days. Gateway to the Amazon, Puyo is undeniably a tourist stop. Road crossroads between the Sierra and the Oriente, many tourists transit there. However, the city in itself does not present much interest for the traveller.
