Although destroyed several times by the eruptions of Cotopaxi, the capital of Cotopaxi province, originally built in 1534 by Antonio Clavijo, with its narrow streets lined with massive, low-slung houses with white walls and traditional tiled roofs, retains a certain cachet that Ecuadorian towns have often lost, if only around the church. Unless you stay here during the Mama Negra festivities (late September and mid-November), there's not much to do, and you'll soon have seen the last of the town. But Latacunga will give you as warm a welcome as the winds can be cold!
