Plaquemine is a small town that is often mistakenly omitted from the tourist circuit. However, its friendly downtown area on the banks of Plaquemine Bayou and the Mississippi River can be a good stop for lunch after visiting one of the many plantations in the area. Plaquemine (persimmon trees) are rare here today and its imposing lock earned it the title of Louisiana's commercial crossroads for a time. Be sure to look up at the imposing steeple of St. John's Church, the "cathedral of the bayou", or to hang around and contemplate the facades of the many antebellum homes.
