It is the seat of the parish of Iberia and is still marked by the different French, Spanish and Acadian influences of its history. Today, it is the capital of the sugar cane industry, which is celebrated during a festival in September. Beautiful historic Creole houses line Main Street, the heart of the city with Bouligny Plaza, where the statue of Francisco Bouligny, the city's founder, is located. It is also home to the late William G. "Bunk" Johnson, the birthplace of George Rodrigue, author of the famous Blue Dog paintings, and the home of the king of zydeco Clifton Chenier.
