Avery Island - or Petite-Anse Island - is a small salt mountain in Iberia Parish. A Native American family settled there in the 1830s and discovered that the lush flora covered a natural salt mine. Despite salt mining until recently, Avery Island has remained a natural paradise for wildlife. It is also a place whose reputation extends beyond the borders of the country because of the production of the famous Tabasco hot sauce. On the same site are the 1868! restaurant and Jungle Gardens, a natural haven of beautiful gardens and abundant wildlife.
