Ghemme has an ancient history, having been inhabited since at least Neolithic times. The Romans introduced grape-growing, which flourished on its well-exposed slopes. Ghemme's wine, made from the nebbiolo grape variety, is highly reputed and the town's pride and joy. Every spring, the wine market takes place in the castle (11th-15th centuries), a well-preserved building that houses the precious wine in its cellars. The wine has to age for three years, including twenty months in oak barrels! Ghemme is also one of Italy's "honey towns", producing delicious acacia honey.
