Neolithic discoveries in Zulte prove that a human presence developed there very early. However, it was not until 1880 that trade and industry took off. Flax, breweries and textiles were the most important industries. Zulte is also known for its cultural and environmental heritage. It is the home of two internationally renowned painters: Roger Raveel and Modeste Huys. They evoke the Leie and the flax workers. It is also the home of the famous writer Gaston Martens, the author of The Birds of Paradise, written in 1930 and later adapted for the cinema with Fernandel as the star
