Located on the road between Baia Mare and Sighetu Marmatiei. Deseşti is home to a sumptuous Unesco-listed wooden church dating from 1770. Its interior frescoes, in the post-Byzantine style, are superb and very well preserved. They are attributed to the two great painters who worked on this art in the region, Radu Munteanu and Alexandru Ponehalschi. Religious scenes and scenes of village life are interwoven, interspersed with friezes featuring traditional plant motifs, similar to those found on costumes or carpets. The pretty village, also renowned for its wood crafts, is one of the departure points for the Gutâi Mountains and the Creasta Cocoşului (Rooster Ridge) nature reserve, the last remnant of a very old volcanic crater. The reserve is criss-crossed by numerous hiking trails. After Deseşti, continuing towards Sighetu, you come to Hărniceşti. This village is home to a beautiful wooden church dating from 1770, with remarkable interior paintings of religious and pagan motifs. The neighboring mansion, built in 1792, is a listed historic monument.
