This village of 1,000 inhabitants is a little paradise on earth, nestled in rolling green hills, where a strong rural and traditional culture still prevails. Poienile Izei boasts an illustrious wooden church, Sfânta Parascheva. Built in 1604, it is the oldest of the eight Unesco-listed churches. It is surrounded by vegetation. The popular-style interior paintings, depicting the Last Judgment, date from the late 18th century. Particularly rich in morbid detail, these paintings were intended to frighten the faithful and show them what awaited them if they didn't listen to the Pope.
