On the pretty road to Sighetu Marmaţiei, you can stop off in Cavnic, a charming little town of 5,000 souls. In winter, the resort, at an altitude of between 950 and 1,260 m, boasts a vast ski area with a variety of slopes. Much less busy than the resorts in the Prahova valley, the site is very pleasant and the snow cover is good. In the center, you'll find a stele bearing the inscription: "Anno 1717 usque hic fuerunt Tartaris", meaning: "In 1717, the Tatars came this far". It recalls the final wave of invasions from the Ukraine, which reached Central Europe via Cavnic.
