At the foot of the Ţibleş mountains, Ieud (population 4,000) boasts a magnificent Unesco-listed wooden church called biserica din Deal (Church of the Hill). The building dates from the early 17th century and its superb paintings, by Alexandru Ponehalschi, date from 1782. One of the oldest books in Romanian Cyrillic, dating from 1391 and called Zbornicul or Codicele de la Ieud, was discovered here. Today, this religious manuscript can be found in Bucharest. Ieud is home to another remarkable church, called "Church of the Valley" (biserica din Vale). In this wooden cathedral dating from 1717, you can see a collection of valuable icons on glass.
