The border village of Săpânța (3,000 inhabitants), located 20 km west of Sighetu Marmației, is renowned for its handicrafts, particularly woollen carpets. Indeed, it's not uncommon to come across spinners on the roadside. But Săpânța is best known for its fabulous "happy cemetery", both visually sublime and humorous. North of the village, you can also visit the wooden monastery of Peri, completed in 2003 and featuring a 78 m-high tower.
