In the far west of the département, this town on the borders of Orne, Manche and Calvados is the birthplace of two goldsmiths, one of writing, the other of tableware: André Breton, founder of the Surrealist movement, and Guy Degrenne, whose cutlery adorns tables. It's also the French capital of hardware. But first and foremost, it was a battle fought here in 1106 that made Tinchebray famous. The battle has left some traces in the names of the localities. Tinchebray has preserved many fine monuments from its medieval and modern past. The little town is well worth a visit.
