The capital of the Bocage region is well worth a visit. Firstly, for its gastronomy, the reputation of its andouille sausage being as well established as that of its Elle & Vire or Cœur de Lion dairy products. And secondly, for its heritage: even though 95% of Vire was destroyed by Allied bombing in June 1944, and the town's architecture bears witness to the Reconstruction period, it has retained the vestiges of the fortified town it once was. This is where Guy Degrenne opened his cutlery workshops in 1967, and where Michel Drucker was born in 1942. The local boy, whose doctor father gave birth to a number of Virois children, loves to return to his homeland.
