A 45-minute walk from Nimborio, Paleo Horio is the island's former capital, now abandoned. Perched high up, it was safe from pirates: the climb can be a bit tough in the middle of August! In its heyday, the town had some 3,000 inhabitants, but today it's a ghost town. Overlooking it on a rocky promontory, you'll see the ruins of the medieval kastro founded by the Knights of the Order of St. John, on the site of an ancient acropolis. Don't hesitate to climb up for a panoramic view of the surrounding area and the Aegean Sea, avoiding the hottest hours in summer.
