The south of Kos offers a different face from the mountainous, forested heart and coastline of northeastern Kos. It is often said that the island of Kos is shaped like a dolphin: the head is in Kos town, the heart of the island is the dolphin's body and the Kefalos region is the tail. The Kefalos area is a must-see by car: 45 km from Kos-ville, this region is less invaded by mass tourism and offers some of the most beautiful beaches on the island. Fine sand reigns supreme here, thanks to the erosion of the volcanic tuff plateau that characterizes the local geology. To reach the most remote beaches on the west coast, at the tip of the dolphin's tail, you'll need a 4x4. The rest of the area is accessible by small rental car (but be prepared for your car to be covered in sand or fine particles: some rental companies charge extra for washing). The first capital of Kos in ancient times, ancient Astypalaia was destroyed by an earthquake in the 4th century BC. Today, Kefalos is a village surrounded by greenery, overlooking the bay and the port of Kamari below. You can visit the few ruins of the ancient Astypalaia, but the wide bay is especially inviting for bathing and water sports: you'll find beautiful beaches here, as well as a major windsurfing spot. Day trips to Nissiros are organized from the small port of Kamari.
