Perched inland on the caldera, the villages of Nikia and Emborios seem to cling to the edge of the precipice, offering a balcony overlooking the volcano. In Nikia, stop off at the volcanological museum and Porta, the central square with its pebble mosaics and touching church. A small café in the square makes for a pleasant break. Emborios, smaller and barely inhabited, is equally charming: a beautiful sleepy village, guarded by a medieval kastro. A path links the two villages in around 50 minutes, along the side of the caldera. Mount Profitis Ilias, the island's highest peak, rises to a height of almost 700 m opposite the villages, which are quite frail by comparison.
