Wadi Musa is the village that developed around the ancient site of Petra. It is most likely where you will stay during your visit to the ancient Nabatean capital. It is a small, unattractive town, scattered on the slopes of a jebel, with streets lined with hotels, restaurants, souvenir stores and banks. The message is clear: "tourists are welcome, because they make us live". The most chic hotels are located right in front of the Visitors Center, in the valley. Thus, Wadi Musa is split in two. The bulk of the restaurants and small hotels on the heights, the posh hotels at the bottom, near the entrance of the site. If you did not rent a car, keep this information in mind. After hours of walking in Petra, the climb back up to Wadi Musa can be psychologically exhausting. Fortunately, there are cabs waiting for you at the exit, if needed. In Arabic, Wadi Musa means "the Valley of Moses", as he is said to have gushed water at the aptly named Moses Springs, a little further north.
