Wadi Rum is a 720 km2 reserve, managed for a long time by the RSCN which made it a "protected area" in 1998. The measure was necessary to control the flow of visitors and protect endangered species. Today, Wadi Rum is under the authority of the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority. The goal of the local authorities remains the same: to preserve the natural environment and the Bedouin way of life while promoting respectful tourism. The result on the ground shows that these are sometimes difficult things to reconcile. Campsites with individual bathrooms and toilets and sometimes even swimming pools are springing up like mushrooms. Access to the protected area is controlled, and it is mandatory to pay an entrance fee. The site has developed as a tourist attraction in recent years. In high season, it is difficult to escape the many Jeeps filled with tourists. However, with its lunar atmosphere, its grandiose landscapes and the hospitality of the Bedouins, Wadi Rum has a real power of wonder that will plunge you into another universe. To really appreciate the immensity of the desert, it is better to spend at least one night, or even several days.
